Looking Down on Saturn

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This unique view of Saturn's night side, with its shadow cast across the rings, was taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1980. From Earth, we can only see the day side of Saturn because our planet is closer to the Sun. Voyager 1 provided unprecedented close-up images of the gas giant. The Cassini mission later provided even more detailed views of Saturn and its rings.
