Colliding Supernova Remnants

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

When a massive star dies, it explodes as a supernova, sending its material hurtling outwards. These expanding clouds of gas and dust are called supernova remnants. They gradually slow down as they sweep up interstellar material. The image shows two such remnants that are colliding, merging their material into a single, larger structure.
