T Pyxidis: Recurrent Nova
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
T Pyxidis is a recurrent nova, a binary star system where a white dwarf repeatedly explodes. The Hubble Space Telescope captured these expanding blobs of material from one of its blasts. Located 6,000 light-years away in the constellation Pyxis, T Pyxidis offers a chance to study thermonuclear events on stellar surfaces. These explosions are not destructive to the white dwarf, allowing it to repeat the process.
