COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp, seen here on March 8th, was photographed in the constellation Cygnus. To the right, the red North American Nebula is visible, a bright emission nebula about 1500 light-years away. The comet, in contrast, was only about 8 light-minutes from Earth. Several bright blue stars from the open cluster M39 are also visible near the nebula.
