Astronaut Bruce McCandless floats freely in space, untethered from the Space Shuttle Challenger. He is maneuvering using a manned maneuvering unit, or MMU, which fires nitrogen gas thrusters. This photo from 1984 records the first time an astronaut performed an untethered spacewalk. The MMU was developed to give astronauts more freedom than traditional tethers allowed.
