Mars Global Surveyor: Aerobraking

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

After a 10-month journey, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft arrived at Mars today. It is scheduled to fire its main engine to enter a highly elliptical orbit, with a low point 186 miles and a high point 34,800 miles above the surface. MGS is aptly named, as its mission is to conduct a detailed, planet-wide survey of Mars. First, it must circularize its orbit by lowering the high point.
