An icy mist and late afternoon clouds drape over Valles Marineris, Mars's colossal canyon system. This test image, from the Mars Global Surveyor's wide-angle cameras, shows a section of the canyon, which is 2,000 miles long and up to 5 miles deep. The color was synthesized from images taken through blue and red filters.
