COSMIC MESSAGE
Mars Global Surveyor is resuming aerobraking into a mapping orbit around Mars. Its wide-angle cameras recently captured this shadowy image of Olympus Mons, the Solar System's largest volcano. Olympus Mons' summit depression, or caldera, is about 40 miles across and 15 miles above the Martian surface. The spacecraft recorded this image from an altitude of over 100 miles.
