In September 1967, the Surveyor 5 lander made a successful soft landing on the Moon's Mare Tranquillitatis, sliding several feet in the process. The US Surveyor spacecraft were designed to assess if lunar landing sites were safe for manned missions. Surveyor 5 touched down on the inclined inner edge of a small crater, and its footpad slipped, digging a trench.
