Neptune at Night

Ice giant Neptune is faint in Earth's night sky, some 30 times farther from the Sun than our planet. Telescopes are needed to catch a glimpse of this dim and distant world. This night side image of Neptune, with its slender crescent next to the crescent of its large moon Triton, was captured by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1989. The image shows the planet from the outer Solar System, looking back toward the Sun.
