White dwarf stars are small and intensely hot, but they are cooling because their nuclear fires have stopped burning. They will continue to cool until they fade away. This Hubble Space Telescope image shows a small region near the center of globular cluster M4. Researchers found a large concentration of white dwarf stars here, circled in the image. This was expected, as low-mass stars, like our Sun, are believed to evolve into white dwarfs.
