Mercury's surface is heavily cratered and rocky, similar to our Moon's. Mercury is about 4800 km in diameter, slightly larger than the Moon. It is the closest planet to the Sun, orbiting at about one-third the Earth's orbital radius. Its surface temperature varies from a frigid -180 degrees Celsius to a scorching 400 degrees Celsius.
