NGC 7009: The Saturn Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The layers of the Saturn Nebula, NGC 7009, provide clues to its formation. This picture, taken in April 1996 and released in December 1997, helps us understand how a low-mass star transforms into a white dwarf. A computer model suggests the central star first expelled the green, barrel-shaped gas, which now confines stellar winds to create a jet.
