The Trifid Nebula in Red, White and Blue
NASA APOD · Jason Ware
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Trifid Nebula gets its name from three dark dust lanes. Its red and blue colors come from different processes. A bright star in the red region excites surrounding gas, causing it to emit red light as electrons recombine with protons. The blue region's dust reflects light from another bright star, creating a reflective nebula.
