COSMIC MESSAGE

These Hubble Space Telescope images show Jupiter's northern and southern lights. Like Earth's aurora, they are caused by charged particles funneled into the atmosphere by magnetic fields. Jupiter's magnetic field is enormous, trapping ionized material from the moon Io. This creates light shows a thousand times more intense than Earth's auroral storms.
