This photo from the Space Shuttle Discovery's April 1991 mission shows distant stars, the wavy bands of the Aurora Australis, and the faint glow of charged plasma around the Shuttle's engines. Discovery's mission, STS-39, carried instruments to study celestial objects, aurora, atmospheric phenomena, and the low Earth orbit environment.
