Aurora Over Alaska

COSMIC MESSAGE
Aurorae occur when solar electrons and protons strike molecules in Earth's atmosphere. They typically range from 60 to 1,000 kilometers above the surface. This photograph, taken in January in Alaska, shows a spectacular aurora borealis above a frozen landscape. From space, a complete aurora often appears as a circle around one of Earth's magnetic poles.
