COSMIC MESSAGE
M82, also known as the Cigar Galaxy, is a nearby galaxy that appears to have undergone a close encounter with its neighbor, M81. This galactic collision likely stirred up M82's inner stars and gas, creating the unusual dark dust lanes visible in this photograph. M82 is a starburst galaxy, with a very active center containing star clusters far brighter than any in our Milky Way.
