Sunspots: Magnetic Depressions

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Our Sun has dark spots, like the ones shown here. These sunspots are actually quite bright, but appear dark against the hotter, brighter solar surface. They are about the size of Earth and often appear in groups. Sunspots form where concentrated magnetic fields poke through the Sun's surface, cooling the area.
