Interstellar Dust-Bunnies of NGC 891

NASA APOD · WIYN, Inc., 3.5-m WIYN Telescope
COSMIC MESSAGE

The galaxy NGC 891 is a spiral galaxy seen almost edge-on, much like our own Milky Way. Recent high-resolution images, however, show unusual dust filaments extending far from its disk. These dust structures were likely ejected from the galactic disk by supernova explosions. Studying them helps us understand how such fragile material survives being thrown into the galactic halo.
