M83 is a bright barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Hydra, visible with a small telescope. It is part of the Centaurus group of galaxies, about 15 million light-years from us. The blue color in its spiral arms comes from numerous bright, young stars that have recently formed there. Dark dust lanes are also visible within its structure.
