NGC 6302: The Butterfly Nebula

NASA APOD · Very Large Telescope, ESO
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Butterfly Nebula, NGC 6302, is only thousands of years old. Its central star, part of a binary system, shed its outer layers of gas in a strong stellar wind. The remaining hot core ionizes this ejected gas, causing it to glow in different colors determined by its composition. This bipolar nebula will shine brightly for only a few thousand more years before its central star fades.
