The Firework Nebula

NASA APOD · WIYN Telescope Consortium
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Firework Nebula, or GK Persei, is the remnant of a nova explosion from 1901. A white dwarf star in a binary system pulled material from its companion, leading to a thermonuclear blast on its surface. The WIYN Telescope captured this expanding shell of gas, a relic of that stellar event.
