M64: The Sleeping Beauty Galaxy

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Sleeping Beauty Galaxy, also known as M64 or NGC 4826, has an unexpected internal motion. Its center rotates in the opposite direction from its outer regions. A middle region also shows stars rotating in the opposite direction from the surrounding dust and gas. These fascinating motions are thought to be the result of a past galactic collision.
