Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was ripped apart by Jupiter's gravity in 1992. This Hubble Space Telescope image shows the fragments, strung out like pearls, before their impact. The comet was discovered in 1993 and gave astronomers an unprecedented chance to study a comet collision with a planet.
