NGC 281: Cluster, Clouds, and Globules

NASA APOD · David Malin (AAO), IAC, RGO, Isaac Newton Telescope
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 281 is an active region of star formation. It includes a small open cluster of stars, a diffuse red-glowing emission nebula, and large lanes of obscuring gas and dust. Dense knots of dust and gas within the nebula may still be forming stars. The open cluster of stars IC 1590, visible in the upper right, formed only in the last few million years.
