COSMIC MESSAGE
The robot Galileo spacecraft caught this image of Io's aurora while the moon was in Jupiter's shadow. Energetic particles collide with Io's atmospheric gases, causing a glow much like Earth's aurora. The red and green colors come from oxygen atoms, while the rare blue light is caused by excited sulfur dioxide. Jupiter, the gas giant, is off to the right of the frame, about 1.3 million kilometers away.
