Charles Messier, an 18th-century astronomer, logged this object as number 27 on his list of things that are definitely not comets. Messier 27, also known as the Dumbbell Nebula, is not a planet either, though it can appear round in a small telescope. It is a gaseous emission nebula, formed as a sun-like star sheds its outer layers at the end of its life.
