NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The International Space Station, seen here with its Zarya and Unity modules, began assembly in orbit in December 1998. The Space Shuttle Endeavour's STS-88 crew docked the first two components. Astronauts James Newman and Jerry Ross then connected power and data cables during spacewalks, bringing the station's initial systems online.
