COSMIC MESSAGE
Each red speck in this image is a powerful quasar, estimated to be over 100 times brighter than a galaxy. These Sloan Digital Sky Survey discoveries appear faint because they are incredibly distant. Their distance is measured by how much their light has been stretched to longer wavelengths by the expansion of the Universe. This stretching is called redshift.
