COSMIC MESSAGE

Explorer 1 was the first US satellite, launched on January 31, 1958, as the fourth stage of a Jupiter-C rocket. The 30-pound satellite carried instruments to measure temperatures, micrometeorite impacts, and electron and ion densities in space. Data from Explorer 1 led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts, a major early finding of the Space Age.
