Aerogel is mostly empty space, but it is solid enough to catch comet dust. This honeycomb of cells was launched on the STARDUST mission in 1999. Its goal was to collect dust from Comet Wild-2 and bring it back to Earth for study. The comet is new to the inner Solar System.
