From low Earth orbit, the Space Shuttle Endeavor captured this time exposure of the Aurora Australis, or southern lights, in April 1994. These aurora are caused by high-energy electrons from the solar wind, funneled into the atmosphere near the poles by Earth's magnetic field. The reddish colors, seen at about 200 miles altitude, are a striking display against the dark of space.
