Hoag's Object: A Nearly Perfect Ring Galaxy

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Hoag's Object, discovered in 1950, is an unusual galaxy with a nearly perfect ring structure. An outer ring of bright blue, young stars surrounds a central ball of much redder, older stars. Between these two components is a dark gap. The formation of this unique ring galaxy, including its remarkably circular shape, is still a subject of ongoing study by astronomers.
