This dramatic picture from the Viking 2 Orbiter shows Phobos, one of Mars's small moons, against the backdrop of the large shield volcano Ascraeus Mons. Phobos is hurtling through space only 3,000 miles above the Martian surface. The Orbiter took this image from about 8,000 miles above the volcano, with Phobos itself 5,000 miles below the Orbiter.
