COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 4945 is a spiral galaxy in the Centaurus Group, located only six times farther away than the Andromeda Galaxy. This image shows the galaxy nearly edge-on, shrouded in dark dust. Because of its orientation and dust, galaxy-gazers need a telescope to see it in the southern constellation of Centaurus. The picture was taken with a large telescope testing a new wide-angle, high-resolution CCD camera.
