Brown Dwarf Gliese 229B

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The faint spot near the bottom of this image is a brown dwarf, an object too small to ignite nuclear fusion like a star, but more massive than a planet. Brown dwarfs are sometimes called 'failed stars' because they lack the mass to sustain stellar burning. They are thought to form through similar processes as stars, but cool and dim over time.
