NGC 1316 is an enormous elliptical galaxy that appears to have consumed a smaller spiral galaxy about 100 million years ago. Evidence includes the dark dust lanes, which are characteristic of spirals. This image also shows unusually small globular star clusters, a mystery for astronomers to solve.
