Ice Fishing for Cosmic Neutrinos

NASA APOD · The AMANDA Collaboration
COSMIC MESSAGE

The AMANDA experiment, located at the South Pole, uses a network of light detectors frozen deep in the ice to search for cosmic neutrinos. Scientists melted holes in the ice to deploy these detectors, which look for faint flashes of blue light. These flashes occur when neutrinos interact with the ice. This setup turns the Antarctic ice sheet into a giant neutrino observatory.
