Impact Moon

The Moon's surface is covered with craters, evidence of frequent impacts during the early solar system. Recent data from the Lunar Prospector spacecraft supports the idea that the Moon formed from debris. This debris came from a giant impact of a Mars-sized planetary body with Earth nearly 4.5 billion years ago. This impact theory explains why Apollo Moon rocks have isotopic ratios similar to Earth rocks.
