The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft began its primary mission to Mars this month. Orbiting at an altitude of over 200 miles, MGS instruments explore the Martian surface and atmosphere. The spacecraft's polar mapping orbit allows for an optimal 'afternoon' sun-angle for imaging as it crosses the planet's day side, providing complete surface coverage roughly once a week.
