COSMIC MESSAGE
Instruments on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft have mapped banded magnetic field patterns on Mars. This was a startling discovery, suggesting that the Red Planet was more Earth-like in its distant past. The red and blue regions within the orbital tracks indicate adjacent areas where magnetic fields point in opposite directions. These bands run east-west, about 100 miles wide and 600 miles long.
