COSMIC MESSAGE
Nova Velorum 1999 was a bright nova, visible to the unaided eye in southern skies. A nova occurs in a binary star system where a white dwarf star accretes matter from a companion. When enough material builds up on the white dwarf's surface, it ignites in a thermonuclear explosion, causing a dramatic increase in brightness. This event offered a rare chance to observe such a stellar outburst.
