NGC 6872: A Stretched Spiral

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 6872 is one of the largest barred spiral galaxies known, stretching over 700,000 light-years across. Its elongated shape may be due to an ongoing collision with the smaller galaxy IC 4970, visible above its center. The galaxy's upper left spiral arm shows an unusually high number of blue star-forming regions.
