Gravitational lensing distorts light from distant galaxies, creating multiple images or stretched arcs. The Hubble Space Telescope's Medium Deep Survey found many candidate gravitational lenses. These distortions happen because massive galaxies bend the fabric of spacetime, deflecting light that passes nearby.
