COSMIC MESSAGE
NGC 4565, known as the Needle Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy viewed edge-on from Earth. Its core of stars bulges from the center of a thin disk of spiral arms and dust. The core appears sharply cut by dark dust lanes in this composite image. Its obscuring dust lanes and pronounced core are typical features of large spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way.
