COSMIC MESSAGE
On July 4, 1997, the Mars Pathfinder spacecraft successfully landed on Mars. It used a parachute and airbags to come to rest at 10:07 AM Pacific Daylight Time. The robot spacecraft vented cooling fluid, jettisoned its cruise stage, and deployed its parachute. It then jettisoned its heat shield, slid down a sixty-foot bridle, and fired solid fuel rockets before impact.
