The Flame Nebula in Infrared

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Flame Nebula, fifteen hundred light years away in Orion, gets its glow from the nearby star Alnitak. Alnitak's energetic light knocks electrons from hydrogen gas, causing the nebula to shine. This infrared view shows the billowing clouds and dark dust lanes that give the nebula its name.
