HCG 87: A Small Group of Galaxies

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Galaxies sometimes form groups, like our own Milky Way in the Local Group. Small, compact groups such as Hickson Compact Group 87, or HCG 87, are interesting because they slowly self-destruct. The galaxies in HCG 87 gravitationally stretch each other during their 100-million-year orbits, leading to star formation bursts and feeding their active galactic nuclei.
