COSMIC MESSAGE
These enormous telescopes in Namibia detect gamma rays from distant cosmic sources. When a gamma ray hits Earth's atmosphere, it creates a shower of charged particles. The particles move faster than light in air, emitting Cherenkov radiation, a blue flash. The H.E.S.S. Observatory's mirrors, some as large as 28 meters, capture these faint flashes, allowing astronomers to study the most energetic phenomena in the universe.
